What Timehop can do for you

Timehop is a young startup application for Smartphone’s that collect old social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Foursquare and Dropbox) posts and photos and replays them.

The company was launched in February 2011 as 4Square and 7 years ago, and the original idea of the company was to replay past foursquare check-ins. Four months later, the founders, Benny Wong and Jonathan Wegener, launched pastposts.com and then And7YearsAgram. Finally, the companies were merged together to form Timehop as a single brand.

An Android Smartphone app that compiles past posts and messages

Since Timehop shows the photos and posts you did years ago, this app has received some negative reviews as well as raving positive reviews.

According to Buzzfeed, Timehop can make you feel not-so-good for the following reasons:

  • It makes you worried about how fast life goes: sometimes you can stumble upon a tweet you wrote a year ago, which feels like just last week.
  • Embarrassing photos: some photos are better left in the history. Some tweets and posts just look weird and embarrassing. Sometimes you wonder whether you were drunk.
  • Past relationships: if you had problems with your ex and you both decided to move on, this type of app does not make things interesting at all.

However, is this really true? Of course, it could be true. But if we look at it from a positive angle, Timehop can also be a source of joy when we flip through those happy photos and messages.

There are times we shared special moments with our loved ones and friends. Also, the past can remind us of special achievements such as college graduation, wedding, new job/promotion and a host of other sweet memories.

From a neutral point of view, if you find Timehop making you distressed about the past, why not do selective viewing?
