In a world where there’s always a new fad such as “Keep Calm” it can be hard to keep up with what exactly each meme means. So here at Growing Social Media we’ve decided to give you the low-down on the REAL meaning of your favorite social media memes. You know.. in case you have been living under a rock. 🙂
Success Kid
Used to display an unusually positive outcome of a negative situation, success kid had humble beginnings as a family photo that photographer mother, Laney Griner took on a beach outing in 2007.
Some notable examples include;
The Most Interesting Man in the World
Based off an advertising campaign for Dos Equis beer this meme follows the pattern
“I don’t always X but when I do, I Y”
Grumpy Cat
The real Grumpy Cat (not the picture on your screens) is owned by Arizonian Tabatha Budesen who posted the photo of her cat, Tardar Sauce on Reddit in September 2012. Used to display everyday/funny ‘grumpy’ moments.
Noteable examples;
Scumbag Steve
Used to describe a dodgy situation where a friend takes the low-road, Scum Bag Steve can usually be identified by the sideways cap, used in spin-offs such as Scumbag Brain. The original image comes from the album “Ma Gangsta” by Beantown Mafia, featuring “Weezy B” (Blake Boston).
Some noteable examples are;
Good Guy Greg
Used as the opposite of Scumbag Steve, Good Guy Greg shows the moments where someone takes the high road.
Some notable examples are;
First World Problems
Used to display problems that only occur in the “First World”, it is used as a tongue in cheek poke at meaningless inconveniences.
Some notable examples are;
Ryan Gosling – Hey Girl
For obvious reasons, my favorite has to be the Ryan Gosling meme.
While we don’t how it came about, it’s safe to say that it’s probably got something to do with him playing the hearthrob in most movies, and his heart-arrhythmia-inducing performance in The Notebook.
Ryan Gosling memes usually begin with “Hey Girl”.
Some notable examples are;
Some other favorites include:
– One Does not Simply
– Willy Wonka
– Skeptical Third World Kid
