“But first, let me take a selfie,” just kidding. Do you use Snapchat, do you know someone who uses Snapchat? I’m going to go ahead and assume that the answer is yes to at least one of those questions.
So, being that almost everyone these days is indulging in the photo/video posting app, what is so great about it?
Could the answer be as simple as the word, fun. When asked about the meaning of social media being truly social, founder of Snapchat, Evan Spiegel gives it to us plain and simple:
“Somewhere along the way, when we were building social media products, we forgot the reason we like to communicate with our friends is because it’s fun.”
Sure, capturing great-angled selfies with the perfect filter is fun to an extent, but what are the other reasons? A friend of mine told me that the makers of Snapchat are geniuses. Why, I asked, intrigued beyond all belief as this person is typically a bit of a “social media hater.” My friend’s response was simple, “Snapchat gave everyone the ability to be a spontaneous news reporter.” How true is that, right? News at the palm of our hands.
With that being said, let’s take a look at some Snapchat facts and numbers, and see just how mind blowing the rise of Snapchat has become.
With only a little over four years under it’s belt (since the app’s release in 2011) these are pretty impressive statistics. With app features such as the infamous geofilter overlays, we can stand out as individuals. Since geofilters are based on our location we have something special, something that everyone who is not where are well, doesn’t have.
We can represent where we are from, but at the same time, we can see what’s happening across the globe. We can see an entire country celebrating a foreign holiday, or we can see our best friend’s dog nailing a trick, it’s almost the best of both worlds.
Snapchat gives us eyes that we just didn’t quite have before. Five years ago, it never would have been thought possible to see what Kylie Jenner was doing right at this exact moment in time. Snapchat sums it up well with a quote from their own website:
“Discover awesome content hand-crafted by the world’s best publishers. Live the real story, straight from the fans.”
By saying, “the world’s best publishers,” Snapchat means YOU, they mean me, they mean all of us.
